How to Style Pillows on a King Size Bed

Thanks to Crane & Canopy for sending me bedding. All opinions are my own.

It's the Monday after my due date, and baby still isn't here (no contraction either)..so let's talk about my bed, because that's pretty much the only place I feel like spending time right now! I mentioned in a previous post that my only complaint about our king size bed is styling the pillows. I love everything else about it...the extra space for stretching out, how substantial it looks in the room, etc.  But dang, it's hard to get pillows to look right. I think part of it is that most of the beds I look to for inspiration are styled for a catalog or a magazine. But no one actually sleeps with twenty different pillows layered on their bed. I worked at Pottery Barn in college, and I remember all the tricks we'd use to make the beds look inviting...we would put TWO duvets inside one duvet cover, add pillows until they came halfway down the bed, fold a big blanket across the foot, and take an industrial steamer to the whole thing. It took forever, plus two duvet covers would be really heavy in real life. Not realistic! But on the other hand, leaving just your two sleep pillows looks kind of sad (as evidenced by our pillows in this post). So I decided to play around until I found a formula that looks full and inviting, but is quick and easy enough to actually recreate every morning.

Styling a king-size bed

Personally, I don't like king size pillows for sleeping on...but you need them to fill the horizontal space of your headboard. So here's what I've been doing: Place two king size shams against the headboard, standing up. Lean two standard size sleep pillows in front of them (also standing up). Add one decorative lumbar pillow in front, and...that's it! The only caveat is, this method requires you to have pretty pillowcases on your sleep pillows (we have white linen ones from Crane & Canopy). I also folded a blanket in thirds and laid it across the foot of our bed, to add some contrast and warmth. This is an easy and practical way to make your bed look more complete!

Calm and neutral master bedroom

I feel like this method is one that I will actually keep up with...it's simple and straightforward, yet still pretty. But of course, if you prefer more fullness, you could always add more decorative pillows in the front.

White linen bedding and a pink velvet pillow

Besides the white linen shams, we also got a matching white linen duvet cover from Crane & Canopy. I love it for spring...it's light and airy and beautiful, and linen feels sooo good against the skin. The pink velvet lumbar pillow is also new. I'm about to be even more outnumbered by boys, but I'm still going to decorate my house with pink!

Bedside table

The other change I made was to add a few more frames on either side of the bed, stacking them vertically with the art that was already there. This gave us a place to put personal photos in our bedroom without using up space on the nightstands!

Do you have a king size bed? Have you struggled with pillow styling too? It's a first world problem for sure, but it's seriously frustrated me for SO long! If you have any other bed styling tricks, I'd love to hear them!

Mirror Mirror: 10 Beautiful Mirrors for Every Room

Thanks to Howard Elliott for partnering with me on this post. All opinions are my own.

Now that it's officially spring (hooray!), I wanted to make a few changes in our house to mark the change in season. So I gave our bedroom a little update. I bought some ranunculus, got new linen bedding, and we finally hung a mirror above our dresser! It took me awhile to decide what style of mirror I wanted here, so this wall has been blank for months. I think this mirror was worth the wait though...it's a beaut! I'm sharing a few photos below, plus I rounded up some beautiful mirrors for every room and style.

Round up: 16 Great Mirrors for Every Room & Style

1. Venetian mirrors - I've been loving Venetian style mirrors lately...they're beautifully detailed, but still work well with modern decor. We picked out the Messina mirror for above our dresser, but I also love the more ornate Regina mirror.

2. Round mirrors - Round mirrors are modern and simple, and work in a variety of rooms. The Simone mirror is a gorgeous basic style, while the Intrepid mirror makes more of a statement. I would hang either of these in an entryway, like we did in ours!

3. Rounded rectangle mirrors - We're thinking of doing a "phase one" bathroom remodel soon, and the Marcello mirror is exactly what I want for above the vanity. I also like this similar option, which has a thinner metal frame. Inspiration photo via House Beautiful.

4. Contemporary mirrors - I also love mirrors in unique, contemporary shapes. More unexpected than your classic circle or rectangle, this style would also be cool in the bathroom or grouped together to form a gallery wall of mirrors. Check out the Delmar Mirror and the Tobias mirror. Inspiration photo via Milk Decoration.

5. Arched mirrors - Last but not least, arched mirrors are one of my favorite styles. They're perfect for above a mantel and work really well for leaning against the wall. We have one that's similar to the Sterling mirror (which I love!) and I'm also really into arched windowpane mirrors like the this one.

Here are all ten mirrors I mentioned in one graphic! Which mirror (or which style) is your favorite?

Mirrors are awesome; they instantly add style, bounce light around, and make the room feel bigger. Plus, practically speaking, it's been nice to have a place in our bedroom where I can check my hair and outfit for the day...not that I'm putting in much effort at this point. Being 39 and a half weeks pregnant means lots of messy buns, no makeup, and stealing Ben's hoodies! Hence why I avoided showing my reflection in all the pictures at the top. ;)

Coastal-Inspired Decor by Cottage & Bungalow

Thanks to Cottage & Bungalow for partnering with me on this post. All opinions are my own.

I always love discovering new-to-me shops, especially when they carry beautifully designed and well-crafted pieces that you can't get just anywhere. Cottage & Bungalow is my latest find, and I love SO many items that they carry. From craftsman furniture, to artisan-made chandeliers, to handwoven rugs from across the world...every item is handpicked for quality. I went on an imaginary shopping spree and picked out a bunch of things I would get if budget weren't a constraint (I wish!), and in real life I picked up some new pillows for our sofa.

Living room

The living room is SO close to finished. I feel like we just need some side tables in here...and maybe a coffee table? I can't decide if it would make the room feel more complete, or just more crowded. We already use the poufs as footrests and it's nice to have open space in the middle for Ian to play in. But I do like how coffee tables look!

Living room pillows

I had fun playing around these pillows. We've always had an eclectic mix of colorful pillows in the living room, but this time I tried to pare it back to a more restrained palette of blush pink and blue. I especially love the fluffy pink pillows and the long blue one in the front. To be honest, these pillows will probably hardly ever look "just so" with a toddler in the house, but I still enjoy fussing around with them. It's an inexpensive way to give the room a whole new feel.

Speaking of which, if you're really observant you may have noticed that we rearranged our living room furniture a little bit. We switched the sofa and the armchairs and brought down the x-benches from our bedroom. Whenever I'm craving something new, I always like to play around with what I already have first. With spring right around the corner, you might be feeling the need to switch things up in your house too. Before you make any new purchases, try rearranging what you already own. It's a free way to scratch that itch and make your home feel fresh!

38 Weeks & My Favorite Maternity Dresses

I'm still super grateful to have reached full term this pregnancy...but dang, this is getting uncomfortable. I told Ben that God must have designed the last few weeks to be miserable so you actually look forward to something as terrifying as pushing a baby out of your vagina...haha. But seriously, I am 100% ready to get this baby outta me! I'm starting to look up all the old wives tales for inducing labor (any suggestions that worked for you??), and at this point I certainly can't be bothered to pick things up off the floor or shave my legs anymore. So don't look too closely!

38 weeks

Pants are not my friend right now, but luckily the weather has been really nice (sunny and in the 50s, yayyyy spring!) so my maternity dresses are on heavy rotation. And today I thought I'd share a few of my favorites from PinkBlush. They're really comfy and good quality, plus most of them are designed to be worn before, during, and after pregnancy. I appreciate that, since it always feels like a waste to spend money on clothes that will only be worn for a few months.

My favorite maternity dresses

1 (love the scalloped hem), 2, 3 (the dress I'm wearing above), 4, 5 & 6 (pockets!)

I noticed that I was drawn to stripes, solids, and the color blue a lot during this pregnancy. I wonder if I would have picked out more pink and floral dresses if I were pregnant with a girl? Did you find that the gender of your baby affected how you dressed during your pregnancy? Just kinda random and interesting to think about...

Anyways, hopefully this will be one of my last posts before baby! C'mon little guy!!!! Your mama is very, veryyyy ready to meet you.
