Rue Magazine: Pacific Northwest Issue

Last week I introduced one of my favorite online magazines and today I'm super excited to share another that I know you all are going to love. In fact, I'm sure many of you already know and love Rue, but just in case you've managed to miss it, it's about time you were introduced! I've been a fan of Rue since it was launched in 2010, but this issue is my new favorite, and for good reason--it's all about the Pacific Northwest! If you don't know, I live in Seattle and grew up in Eastern Washington, so this issue tugged at my heartstrings and made me proud of the beautiful place I live--and the awesome, creative people that also call this place home.

The whole issue is gorgeous, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite features and what I loved about 'em. Let's start with Kirsten Grove's swoon-worthy bedroom, shot by Sara K. Byrne. The deep charcoal accent wall, the floral prints held up with tape, and that colorful graphic rug...umm, what's not to love?

I also want her floral jeans...where can I get a pair?

I had never heard of Kirsten before reading this issue, but I'll definitely be following her from here on out! I love her style, and spent a good amount of time on her blog yesterday. You should check it out--I think you'll like it too.

Next up, let's go to the woods for a Pacific Northwest picnic, styled by Hen & Chicks Collective and shot by Julie Harmsen.

I love the Mexican blanket used as a table runner, and the simplicity and earthiness of the whole shoot. Very Pacific Northwest-y.

So cozy. These images make me want to go camping!

My other favorite feature was the one on Rachelle Francey's pretty, monochrome house. As I mentioned in this post, I'm more of a colors girl, yet I'm always drawn to neutrals and a clean, black and white palette. Rachelle's house is lovely because it doesn't seem cold or uninviting, as homes with a lack of color sometimes do to me. Rather, it's full of creative ideas and quirky touches. Beautiful, and definitely homey.

What a great idea, using a simple wire hanger as a magazine rack/display.

I love those dining chairs, especially with the half-painted legs.

So much prettiness here in the Pacific Northwest, I tell ya! What was your favorite feature/photo?

My Summer Wishlist

Unfortunately, this weekend I got sick. I lost my voice completely on Saturday, which totally sucked since I wanted to catch up with my family and friends I haven't seen in awhile. So frustrating! Plus my throat hurt and I just generally felt exhausted and gross. But while I was feeling under the weather, the weather itself was amazing! I went to Lake Couer d'Alene on Saturday. My sister and I laid out on the beach and read, while my parents went for a walk and Ben went for a run. It was so warm and sunny and it really felt like summer! So despite the way I was feeling, I couldn't help but be happy about that. I know it's barely spring, but there's something about that hot sun that makes you start thinking of all the things you want to do in the summer...and all the things you want for summer. When I worked at Pottery Barn, I always thought it was so weird because we'd start putting out Christmas stuff in November, spring stuff in February, and summer stuff in April. It's like the store was always conditioning people to want the next season rather than enjoy the one we were in. But I think that's really the way people are. We're always looking forward to the next. So while I am very glad that it's spring and I'm enjoying the cherry blossoms and tulips and all that, I have to admit, I'm also very much wishing for summer! Here's my summer wishlist...what's on yours?

1. An "itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini!" I think the shape of this one is really cute. My stomach is not my favorite part of my body so I'm intrigued by retro style high waisted bottoms like these. Plus, this swimsuit is on sale at J.Crew, and I'm a sucker for a sale! 2. A pair of Sperry's, with a touch of neon. 3. Summer always makes me want new nail polish colors, like mint green. 4. I used to have a galvanized caddy similar to this one...I wish I would have kept it. It would be perfect for outdoor entertaining--silverware and napkins in one section, a bottle of lemonade or whatever in another, a stack of cups in the third, and a vase of some fresh flowers in the fourth. 5. There's definitely something about summer that makes you want to relax outside with a good book or magazine...time to sign up for some magazine subscriptions! 6. Floral paper straws are a pretty alternative to the striped paper straws that are everywhere now. 7. I used to think maxi skirts were really unflattering, but I think it's because I had really loose ones that hung off my hips and made my bottom half look about a mile wide. This striped jersey one looks both comfy and really cute! 8. These Swedish Hasbeen sandals are supposedly really comfortable and lightweight (and they look good with everything from shorts to skirts to pants!) I doubt I'll get a pair anytime soon though, because they are pretty expensive. They remind me a little of Danskos, which I used to wear in high school and thought were so awesome until Ben informed me that they were the ugliest shoes he's ever seen (ha!) These ones are cuter, right honey?

What things are you most looking forward to for summer--or are you one of those rare people who just take each day at a time and enjoy the season that you're in?

91 Magazine

How do you guys feel about online magazines? I really like them, although they'll never replace print ones in my opinion--it just feels like such a treat to sit down with a real magazine. But online magazines are definitely gaining popularity and it's easy to see why! They're full of fresh ideas, the convenience can't be beat, and most of them are free (that's a big plus for me!). There are quite a few out there now, in just about every category. One of my favorite interior design e-mags is UK-based 91 Magazine. In case you guys haven't read it yet (or even if you have) I gathered a few of my favorite photos from their most recent issue, which came out last week.

I loved the article on creative workspaces. Your office doesn't have to be dreary and soulless--especially if it's in your home! A room with a cheap desk, a computer, and a stack of files certainly won't inspire much creativity. Treat your office the way you would any other room in your house and make it a warm, welcoming environment that you'll want to spend time in!

I also, of course, loved the article on Selina Lake. I've written about her before here, and I pretty much love all her work!

There was also a cute idea to make a tea tray out of a frame! Just add a couple drawer handles on either side of the frame and cover the glass with wallpaper (or wrapping paper). Super cute, don't you think? And pretty easy!

I also quite enjoyed the house tour of photographer Natasha Denness. She has great style, and her home is filled with quirky, unique treasures...not to mention that baby pink SMEG which I'm totally coveting.

Last but certainly not least, there was a really cute tour of this store called The Hambledon in Winchester, UK. I wish it was in Seattle --I would definitely shop there, even if it was just to drool over those floors!

Since I don't have a big desktop screen, I usually just browse through online mags for the photos. It's too much effort to read all the text on a 13" laptop! But to be honest, I'm kind of a picture person anyways...I usually skim through the photos in design books first, then dig in to the words.

Do you guys read online magazines? If you do, do you really read them or do you just look at the photos? Any other favorite e-mags you'd recommend? And what was your favorite article from this issue of 91 Magazine?

Thanks to Caroline for sharing these photos with me!

Kitschy Midcentury Home

How was everyone’s weekend? Amazing, I hope! I wanted to kick off this week with a house tour photographed by Simply Rosie. I love Rosie--her photography is always so dreamy and her style is really similar to mine! Besides all that, she was the photographer for our wedding, anniversary session, and a styled shoot we did for Love & Lavender. When I saw this lovely home on her blog, I was captivated by that bright teal wall and all the retro accents. Midcentury modern is not exactly my style, but this home is so cheerful, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it!

Stef, the owner of this lovely home, is a blogger and has a vintage boutique with her best friend. They run it out of a 1956 camper trailer which they converted into a mobile shop! How cute is that?

Stef’s family has lived in this house for 70 years--her grandparents bought it when it was first built back in the 40’s!

The turquoise sofa in the living room was one Stef found at a local Goodwill for next to nothing. I like that she's not at all afraid to use color in bold ways--on the sofa, or the big accent wall. She says, I think that as long as you love the color and it makes you feel happy then you have nothing to be intimidated by. I have always been very attracted to bright colors and find them very inspiring and uplifting, which is why I chose to incorporate them into my home. I think it also helps that I mixed some bright walls with some neutral ones so the color isn't so overwhelming.
