An Artist’s Home: Britt Bass

Britt Bass is my favorite artist at the moment (have you seen her work yet?). I’ve mentioned her cheery and whimsical art in this post, and a painting of hers is still very much on my wish list. So naturally I was super excited when I saw her house featured on The Everygirl! I wasn’t surprised at all that I loved it (I follow her on Instagram, so I already knew she has great style), but I was still really impressed at how put together it is…especially since Britt is only 25, the same age as me! I feel like she has her life (and her house) way more figured out than I do.

I love the photo above. The paintings propped against the mantel, the ceramic bust, and the bookshelf stuffed to the brim with books! Such an interesting corner...

She is SO talented, isn’t she?!

I also really like this simple and relaxing bedroom space. The oars on the wall are genius.

Gifts for Men

Alright, yesterday we did something for the grads, so today let’s do a post for the dads, shall we? Because Father’s Day is this Sunday. Did you realize that? This Sunday! I so did not realize that until this week. That’s why I’m titling this post “Gifts for Men” instead of “Father’s Day Gifts”…because let’s be honest, anything you order today won’t arrive in time for Father’s Day this year. But if you’re a procrastinator like me, here’s a list of some awesome and manly stuff that your dad totally won’t mind waiting for. Besides, there are plenty of reasons to buy gifts for the men in your life, so hopefully you’ll find this round-up helpful even if it’s not for Father’s Day! Ben’s birthday is at the beginning of June, so several of these are actually things I got for his birthday this year (the whiskey stones and Bigfoot socks--he totally believes Bigfoot is real). I also thought about getting him a waterproof phone case, and the paddleboard I linked to is the one he has!

Gifts for men // At Home in Love

Gifts for Men (to buy): 1. Whiskey stones -  $19.49 (so his iced drinks don’t get diluted by melting ice!) / 2. Sasquatch socks - $11.50 (Bigfoot socks for big feet...get it?) / 3. Waterproof iPhone case - $89.95 (perfect for water adventures this summer) / 4. His own sink - $1999 (so he doesn’t have to deal with your hair in the sink and all your beauty products crowding the counter) / 5. Man candles - $15 (with man-friendly scents like BBQ, Little Italy Pizza, and Woodshop) / 6. Stand-up paddleboard - $899 (this is the one Ben has…he loves it).

I also thought I’d share some DIY gifts, because these ones you actually could conceivably get done before Sunday…and because they are too cute not to share!

Gifts for Men (to make): 1. Golf course cupcake / 2. Lego cufflinks / 3. Burger balloons (yes, these are a DIY!) / 4. Folded dress shirt card (I’m thinking of making these for our dads this year) / 5. Leather flask cover

Which of these is your favorite idea? Do you have something awesome ready for your dad--or did Father’s Day totally creep up on you, like it did me?

DIY Graduation Goodies

I know this post might be too late for some people, but I’m hoping that it will be just in time for at least a few of you! I took the day off work yesterday and whipped up a bunch of DIY projects that I’ve been meaning to do for awhile. Life has been busy, busy, busy, so I haven’t had as much time for DIYs as I would like. Anyways, this post has been on my list for awhile and with graduation season drawing to a close, I figured I’d better do it quickly! Luckily, both of these ideas are really easy, so even if you’re throwing a graduation party this weekend, I promise you can pull these goodies off in plenty of time. I can’t take credit for originating either of these ideas, but I thought they were so cute that I had to give them a try and share with you all. The Reese’s peanut butter cup graduation caps were originally dreamed up by Bakerella (she made them into “cake” pops), and the Pirouette diplomas are something I stumbled across on Pinterest.

DIY graduation themed goodies - super easy to make!

Supplies for graduation cap cupcake toppers

For the graduation cap cupcake toppers, you will need Reese’s peanut butter cups, pull-apart Twizzlers, and Godiva squares. All these can be found at your average grocery store. If you can find individually wrapped squares, that would be even better! When I broke the squares apart from the bar, the edges ended up a little jagged…but I don’t think that’s really a big deal. DIY chocolate graduation caps -- made with Reese’s peanut butter cups and Godiva chocolate squares

So, what you do is break apart the Godiva squares (or unwrap them if you found individual squares). Melt one of the squares--if one of them had especially jagged edges when you broke them apart, pick that one to melt. Unwrap the peanut butter cups and turn them upside down. Use the melted chocolate to “glue” the Godiva squares on top of the peanut butter cups (right in the middle). Let it harden.

How to make Reese’s peanut butter cup graduation cap cupcake toppers

Meanwhile, pull apart the Twizzlers into individual strands. Using a knife, carefully cut the end of an individual Twizzler strand into three strips. Cut it off and use more melted chocolate to stick it in the very center of the Godiva square. This makes the tassel! Continue until all the caps have a tassel. Let harden, then place the completed graduation caps on top of your cupcakes.

So cute, right??

Supplies for Pirouette “diplomas"

The cookie diplomas are even easier. All you need are Pirouette cookies and more of those pull-apart Twizzlers.

Pirouette “diplomas” with pull-apart Twizzler bows

Simply tie individual Twizzler strands around the Pirouettes, forming a bow in the center. Lay them on a plate, and voila--edible diplomas!

Have you seen (or tried) either of these ideas yet? I think they’d be perfect for graduation parties--or if you’re not hosting any parties this year, you could also give away individual cupcakes to the graduates you know!

More Air Plants + A Giveaway

One can never have too many air plants, right? I hope you’ll agree with me because…I got more! Lots more. Remember my DIY mini pallets that I mounted on the wall? Well, the air plants I originally bought to keep there have gotten too big for the pallets (yay, they’re growing!). Which means I’ve had empty pallets hanging on the wall for about a month. So when Air Plant Design Studio reached out to me to see if I’d be interested in reviewing their plants, it took me all of about 2 seconds to say “yes, please!” They sent me a huge assortment of air plants, all in great condition and each one so unique. I love that about air plants…they each seem to have their own personality! They also sent me a couple of glass terrariums. I’m not sure where I’ll end up hanging the terrariums, but for now I looped them over the finials of our curtain rods and made a little layered display with the pallets. I like it alright, but I have a feeling I’ll end up moving the terrariums eventually. They’re definitely cute enough to be on their own!

Air plant display & a giveaway!

I love air plants

I also thought I’d share the care instructions that Air Plant Design Studio included with my air plants, in case any of you have had questions about how to keep yours in good shape. They’re very thorough and helpful (and if you want more info, they have even more in-depth instructions here):

Upon receiving your air plants, soak plants for about 20 minutes face down in bowl, sink, or other container. Gently shake off any excess water and leave out to dry. Use rain water, aquarium water, or pond water when possible. Most tap water will be fine as well, however do not use softened or distilled water. Soak plants once or twice a week with occasional misting as needed. Depending on how dry or humid the environment may be, longer or more frequent watering may be needed. Never allow air plants to sit in water, it will make them rot!

How to take care of air plants

Plants will do best with indirect sunlight but will be fine with good artificial lighting. An east or west facing window will allow plenty of indirect light. Keep plants away from direct sunlight, as most varieties will burn easily. Depending on your environment, air plants will be happy outside on a nice shady tree or porch. Give air plants good air circulation, as they get a lot of nutrients from the air. After watering, plants should be able to dry within 4 hours. Bring plants indoors if temperatures drop below 50 degrees.

Air plant decor

I tucked some of my new air plants into my pallets, and I put the rest in a metal globe we have, which used to be on our mantel. Now it looks like the air plants are taking over the world!
